Germany's Maut road tolls will increase in 2023
From 1 December 2023, it will become more expensive to drive trucks with a total weight over 7.5 tonnes on German roads.
This is due to an increase in the Maut road tax, which is a fixed state road toll for lorries in Germany. The German federal government has made this decision due to the new German regulations on CO2 emissions related to transport.
Exactly how the tax will increase depends on various factors, such as CO2 emission class, weight, number of axles and pollution class of the individual truck.
How does this affect your shipping costs?
Your carriers have no influence on the Maut road toll or its increase. Therefore, if you use road transport in Germany, you will notice this increase in your freight costs.
Electric trucks and trucks up to 3.5 tonnes GVW
Zero-emission lorries will be exempt from the Maut road toll until the end of 2025. This is part of Germany's efforts to promote the transition to electric trucks and reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector.
From 1 July 2024, the Maut road toll will also start to affect trucks with a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes.
The effect of the increase
We have calculated the average effect of the new toll rates to be 6.3%.
